According to the Mayo Clinic, about 3% of adolescents have scoliosis. Most cases of scoliosis remain mild, but some spine deformities continue to get more severe as children grow.
What is exactly is Scoliosis? In simple terms, it is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While occasionally caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis remains unknown. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. Etiology of Scoliosis
According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Scoliosis can be classified by the cause of the curvature. The diagnosis of Idiopathic scoliosis prevails when all other causes become excluded and comprises about 80 percent of all cases. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis and is usually diagnosed during puberty.
Congenital scoliosis results from embryological malformation of one or more vertebrae and may occur in any location of the spine. The vertebral abnormalities cause curvature and other deformities of the spine because one area of the spinal column lengthens at a slower rate than the rest. The geometry and location of the abnormalities determine the rate at which the scoliosis progresses in magnitude as the child grows. Because these abnormalities become present at birth, congenital scoliosis usually becomes detected at a younger age than idiopathic scoliosis.
Neuromuscular scoliosis encompasses scoliosis that is secondary to neurological or muscular diseases. This includes scoliosis associated with cerebral palsy, spinal cord trauma, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and spina bifida. This type of scoliosis generally progresses more rapidly than idiopathic scoliosis and often requires surgical treatment.
Symptoms of Scoliosis
Several symptoms can be indicators of Scoliosis. In many cases shoulders appear uneven, one or both shoulder blades may stick out. Often, the head fails to appear centered directly above the pelvis. Also, one or both hips appear raised or unusually high, rib cages rest at different heights, or the waist appears uneven. Less often, the appearance or texture of the skin overlying the spine changes (dimples, hairy patches, color abnormalities).
In one study, about 23 percent of patients with idiopathic scoliosis reported back pain at the time of initial diagnosis. Typically, the pain experienced with adult onset scoliosis is the result of pressure on the spinal disks. However, Scoliosis can cause pain for other reasons. The curvature of the spine can stretch, irritate, or pinch nerves. It can also strain joints, causing them to become worn or inflamed. In several studies, multiple cannabinoids showed overwhelming capabilities of reducing neuropathic pain and inflammatory pain. These results are due to the fact that both CB-1 and CB-2 Receptors are important mediators for suppressing both inflammatory and pain responses.
Cannabidiol acts as a CB-1 Receptor antagonist and has endocannabinoid modulating effects. Studies have expressed that local CBD administration inhibited pain and peripheral sensitisation. In fact, CBD has been reported to cause modulation of TNF , IL-1, and IFN-γ production by human blood cells. High levels of these cytokines can cause inflammation and damage cells and tissues. Additionally, several patents outline the use of Cannabigerol (CBG) for treatment of diseases and conditions benefiting from concurrent agonism of the CB1 and the CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Such diseases or conditions to be treated are taken from the group: pain, neurodegenerative disease, age related inflammatory or autoimmune disease, movement disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. In addition, the topical use of cannabinoid extracts as an analgesic has been described in US6949582. The cannabinoid extract of the patent includes all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes and flavinoids that are found in cannabis plant extracts . Amongst these is the cannabinoid, Cannabigerol.
