Reduce Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms with Cannabinoid Products

Restless Leg Syndrome is a very common sleeping disorder which is linked to neurological dysfunction. Also called Willis-Ekbom Disease, this disorder causes unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “Moving the legs or walking typically relieves the discomfort. However, the sensations often recur once the movement stops. Classified as a sleep disorder, RLS symptoms become triggered by resting and attempting to sleep. Medical professionals also classify this disorder  as a movement disorder, since people must move their legs in order to relieve symptoms. However, this disorder is best characterized as a neurological sensory disorder with symptoms produced from within the brain itself.” In most cases, the cause of RLS remains unknown. However, studies exhibit links to Iron Deficiency, Neuropathy, Pregnancy and other factors.

Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome Vary

Restless Leg Syndrome affects the individual’s ability to achieve restful sleep. Often this will cause the individual to experience daytime sleepiness which can affect mood, job performance, concentration, and personal relationships. These effects contribute to depression and anxiety and spread into other aspects of daily life such as travel and memory.

Those with Restless Leg Syndrome will experience many symptoms. The primary symptoms are discomforting sensations in the lower limbs accompanied by an irresistible urge to move. These sensations in the limbs may differ from individual to individual and even night to night.  Described as aching throbbing pulling or crawling, these sensations less commonly affect the arms, and rarely the chest or head. Although the sensations can occur on just one side of the body, they most often affect both sides. They can also alternate between sides. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful. Individuals who suffer these symptoms have expressed that they feel it decreases their quality of life.

Cannabinoid Products Reduce Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms

Control Pain Levels with Cannabinoid Products

Many studies have exhibited the pain relieving benefits of Cannabinoids, such as CBD and CBC. The full extent of these benefits is unknown. However science is getting us closer to understanding the physiological activities of some of the most prevalent Cannabinoids. Many Cannabinoids offer anti-inflammatory benefits by acting on the CB2 receptors located in the Immune System in White Blood Cells. When the body is experiencing inflammation, this is commonly due to white blood cells releasing inflammatory Cytokines (proteins that signal inflammation). When certain Cannabinoids become introduced to the system, they stimulate these receptors causing a dys-regulation in the release of these Cytokines.

Cannabinoids also exert their effects through induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, suppression of cytokine production and induction of T-regulatory cells (Tregs).

Cannabinoids Exhibit Neuropathic Pain Relief and Neuroprotective Benefits

Medical professionals all agree that Restless Leg Syndrome is an effect of Neurological dysfunction. Fortunately, Cannabinoids have also exhibited promising results in models of neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is the result of an injury or malfunction of the peripheral or the central nervous system.

Cannabinoids are ideal therapeutic agents in the treatment of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. They can effectively attenuate pathological pain without significantly causing major psychoactive side effects and analgesic tolerance. Current studies provide several lines of evidence to suggest that CBD and DH-CBD suppress persistent inflammatory and neuropathic pain by targeting the 3 GLYReceptors.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is exhibits neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. As such, researchers tested CBD in models of neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. CBD exhibits promising results in the control of toxicity induced by B-amyloid peptide. (responsible for neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s patients)

The Cannabinoids Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabidivarin (CBDV) are now being studied as possible medications for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases or disorders.

Cannabinoid Products Reduce Muscle Spasms

Several studies have provided anecdotal and clinical evidence that Cannabinoids exhibit anti-spasmodic benefits.

In a survey, anonymous subjects gave feedback about their symptoms and how Cannabinoids affected those symptoms. Of these individuals, 57 were men and 55 women (age range, 22 –67 years). Of these, 59 were from the United States and 53 from the United Kingdom.Over 90% of those who were experiencing the following symptoms reported improvement after taking cannabis: spasticity at sleep onset (96.5%), pain in muscles (95.1%), spasticity when waking at night (93.2%), pain in the legs at night (92.3%), tremor of arms/head (90.7%), and depression (90.6%). It is important to note that these are ANECDOTAL reports.

One particular study published in a European Neurology Journal outlined the anti-spasmodic characteristics of a CBD:THC formulation. Based on those results of this prospective observational pilot study, a THC:CBD oromucosal spray reduced the number of spasms and was generally well tolerated.

Achieve Restful Sleep with Cannabinoid Products

Recent studies demonstrate that the Endocannabinoid System regulates the circadian sleep–wake cycle, including the maintenance and promotion of sleep. Specifically, researchers hypothesize that the ECS serves as the link between circadian regulation systems and the behavioral and physiological processes affected, including sleep.

Administration of CBD has been shown to have differing effects on sleep dependent upon dosing amounts. Indeed, low-dose CBD has a stimulating effect, while high-dose CBD has a sedating effect. In a study among individuals with insomnia, results suggested that administration of 160 mg/day of CBD increased total sleep time. It also decreased the frequency of arousal during the night, while low-dose CBD has been associated with increased wakefulness.  These results suggest that individuals may be able to use CBD as not only a sleep aid, but also as a way to promote daytime alertness.

Cannabinoid Products help Manage Mood and Stress

CBD has a broad pharmacological profile, including interactions with several receptors known to regulate fear and anxiety-related behaviors. Systemically administered CBD reduced acute increases in heart rate and blood pressure induced by restraint stress. It also the delayed anxiogenic effects of stress. Overall, existing preclinical evidence strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders. CBD exhibits a broad range of actions,  including anxiolytic actions and prevention of the long-term anxiogenic effects of stress.
