Restless Leg Syndrome is a very common sleeping disorder which is linked to neurological dysfunction. Also called Willis-Ekbom Disease, this disorder causes unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “Moving the legs or walking typically relieves the discomfort. However, the sensations often recur once the movement stops. Classified as a sleep disorder, RLS symptoms become triggered by resting and attempting to sleep. Medical professionals also classify this disorder as a movement disorder, since people must move their legs in order to relieve symptoms. However, this disorder is best characterized as a neurological sensory disorder with symptoms produced from within the brain itself.” In most cases, the cause of RLS remains unknown. Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome Vary
Restless Leg Syndrome affects the individual’s ability to achieve restful sleep. Often this will cause the individual to experience daytime sleepiness which can affect mood, job performance, concentration, and personal relationships. These effects contribute to depression and anxiety and spread into other aspects of daily life such as travel and memory.
Those with Restless Leg Syndrome will experience many symptoms. The primary symptoms are discomforting sensations in the lower limbs accompanied by an irresistible urge to move. Described as aching throbbing pulling or crawling, these sensations less commonly affect the arms, and rarely the chest or head. Although the sensations can occur on just one side of the body, they most often affect both sides. They can also alternate between sides. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful. Individuals who suffer these symptoms have expressed that they feel it decreases their quality of life.

Of these, 59 were from the United States and 53 from the United Kingdom.Over 90% of those who were experiencing the following symptoms reported improvement after taking cannabis: spasticity at sleep onset (96.5%), pain in muscles (95.1%), spasticity when waking at night (93.2%), pain in the legs at night (92.3%), tremor of arms/head (90.7%), and depression (90.6%). It is important to note that these are ANECDOTAL reports.
One particular study published in a European Neurology Journal outlined the anti-spasmodic characteristics of a CBD:THC formulation. Based on those results of this prospective observational pilot study, a THC:CBD oromucosal spray reduced the number of spasms and was generally well tolerated.
